Why do I need to talk to a professional?
It can be intimidating to share personal information with someone new. However, there are many benefits to making the brave decision to seek out support from a social worker, counselor or psychologist. Trained professionals can support you with developing the tools to not only address the concerns that you have now, but also help ensure that you have the skills to continue to build resiliency for life. There is evidence too that therapy can literally rewire your brain in some of the same ways that medical intervention/medication does (always consult your physician when it comes to decisions about medication). Therapy has also been shown to improve physical health, build empathy for the behavior of others, and know that you are not alone in how you may be feeling.
How many sessions will my child or I need?
The needs of each individual are unique. Some clients find that 4-8 weeks of support is enough time to build the skills to feel confident in addressing their concerns independently in the future. Others feel that long-term, consistent work together feels more comfortable. We can work together to determine the duration and frequency that is best for you or your child.
What will happen during my session?
Each session together will be centered around the unique needs and goals that we have established. My role is to guide you with support, skills and education.
Can you tell me what my child says during their sessions?
Due to confidentiality, I generally do not share anything discussed in a session with any other person, whether it be a child or an adult. However, there may be things that I encourage your child to share with you on their own if appropriate. I will also share skills that we worked on so that you might implement them at home. Additionally, if I have a concern about the safety of your child (suicidal thoughts, harm by others, etc.) I will immediately share that information with you.
Finally, as a Colorado Mandated Reporter, I am obligated to report suspicions of abuse or neglect to the proper authorities. Disclosures and reports of abuse or neglect overrides confidentiality.
Do you offer Teletherapy?
Yes! Teletherapy is offered via my HIPPA approved portal on my website. It is preferred that children and adolescents be seen in person to maintain attention and connection.
